Differentiate Small Drusen with Dark Adaptometry

Show Description +

It can be difficult to tell whether the presence of small drusen (< 63 micrometers) is an early warning sign of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) development or a normal part of aging. In this month’s episode of Eye Care Insiders, Joseph J. Allen, OD, FAAO, Dipl ABO, describes the use of dark adaptometry to classify and diagnose subclinical dry AMD with findings of small drusen.

@ Jenny Sidney - Thank you so much Jenny. Dark adaption can be measured through a few clinical tools. It used to be pretty difficult to do dark adaptometry because of the time commitment and access to testing (usually only available in academic settings). Maculogix is a company that now provides a more easy to use and practical clinical tool call AdaptDx and the AdaptDx Pro. The basics of how it works is the eyes are put in a scenario with no light and then a bright flash of light is used to bleach the retinal cells. Then lights are shown and the patient is required to respond to when they are able to perceive a stimulus. Here is the website from AdaptDx if you want to learn more: https://www.maculogix.com/

Hi Joseph, I found your video very interesting. what exactly do you mean by Dark Adaptometry? Related to contrast sensitivity? How do you actually test it? Thanks, Jenny Sidney
