Barry Schechter, MD, a 52-year-old patient presented with complaints that "something was eating her eye." Upon slit lamp exam a motile worm is observed under the conjunctiva. The patient is immediately rushed to surgery to remove the parasite. The CDC pathology analysis determines the worm species to be dirofilaria immitis, most commonly referred to as heartworm.
