CLAU (Conjunctival Limbal Autograft) for Unilateral Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency

Show Description +

This is a case of a 61 year-old man who suffered an alkali burn to his right eye from drain cleaner. He was referred one month after the injury with severe inflammation and scarring. Unfortunately, initial therapy after the exposure did not include anti-inflammatory medication. His acuity on presentation was 20/160. Rehabilitation of the eye required an initial period anti-inflammatory therapy followed by a staged surgical approach on three separate occasions beginning first with symblepharon lysis, mucous membrane grafting and amniotic membrane graft to release and clean up scar tissue followed by CLAU, and final treatment of diffuse anterior stromal scarring with PTK. He still required an RGP lens after completion of all surgery, but was able to see 20/20 with correction.
