Subretinal Foreign Body Removal

Show Description +

This video shows a pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for removal of an intraocular foreign body embedded under the retina. The patient was a 50-year-old man who had accidentally shot himself in the eye with a BB gun 2 days prior. PPV was done during the first globe repair surgery, but the metal BB could not be located. During this surgery, profuse bleeding was again encountered. Viscoelastic, perfluorocarbon liquid, and air infusion was used to clear enough of a view to find and remove the foreign body.
