According to David Chang's book, snap and split was probably the first description of vertical chop.

It looks like in snap and split, you push the phaco tip away while pulling the chopper in an arc. In vertical chop, there isn't as much of a pushing away motion with the phaco tip. Still, overall, it's pretty much the same technique.
