In this video, Amar Agarwal, FRCS, describes the technique of implanting a foldable glued IOL using the handshake technique. It is an extremely useful and essential-to-learn maneuver for transferring haptics from one hand to the other bimanually by using two intraocular end gripping forceps.

Dr Agarwal, What instrument do you recommend for making the marks for the exact location of the flaps, ie what marker? Thank you. Lawrence Frank, MD

Lawrence, There is a special marker designed for this made by Epsilon. This helps mark the scleral flaps width also. It also helps measure the white to white of the eye approximately. If the WTW is more than 11 mm one would realize with it. The reason this is also important is that if the eyeball is large we need to do a vertical glued IOL. Alternatively, any marker like the ones used for radial keratotomy markings can be used. The basic idea is to see that the flaps are opposite each other. We have no financial interest for any of the instruments designed. Amar agarwal

there is a disposable 23g vitreoretinal forcep with serrated jaws available at our hospital. Would that be OK to grab the tip of the haptic? Would a non serrated forcep work better?

Brilliant technique. What is the size and type of the MST forcep which works best?

Do use a 23 g forceps.. The sclerotomy is with a 20 g needle so the 23 g forceps will easily go through. Amar agarwal
