Hideharu Fukasaka, MD, provides a detailed demonstration of the Snap and Split phaco technique, the forerunner of "phaco quick chop," which utilizes concentrated potential energy to crack the nucleus.
It looks like in snap and split, you push the phaco tip away while pulling the chopper in an arc. In vertical chop, there isn't as much of a pushing away motion with the phaco tip. Still, overall, it's pretty much the same technique.
