Overviewing his Binkhorst Medal lecture, Boris Malyugin, MD, PhD, speaks about the pharmacological and mechanical approaches to dilating the small pupil in cataract surgery and recounts the history of these devices. Dr. Malyugin also explains how he came up with the idea to use the scroll principle for iris expansion and describes the development of the Malyugin Ring and Malyugin Ring 2.0 (MicroSurgical Technology).
