Get to know your laser (with realistic power settings and tissue effects) before working on patients. Appreciate the depth of the intraocular structures including the iris, anterior capsule, lens and posterior capsule. Focus on the posterior capsule and practice various techniques to perform a YAG capsulotomy. Use the laser offset to avoid hitting the lens.
