Arturo Maldonado-Junyent, MD; Ana Maldonado Junyent, MD, PhD, María Maldonado-Junyent, MD; and Arturo Maldonado-Bas, MD, PhD; describe a femtosecond laser and excimer hybrid technique for lamellar keratoplasty called FEHLK. This technique was developed by blending or mixing techniques to achieve one that is reproducible, easy to learn, and achieves optimal visual outcomes. The center 3mm area over the visual axis is manually dissected in order to create a smoother, more regular interface. With this hybrid technique the authors aim to make it possible for any corneal surgeon to reproduce the technique that they believe is currently best suited to solve corneal ectasias with a good final visual acuity and decreased risk and complication rate.
