Why, in the age of vitrectomy, would anyone would be interested in developing a better scleral buckle? For one, Paul Tornambe, MD, explains, a scleral buckle is less invasive than vitrectomy. It is also less costly when compared with vitrectomy. The configuration of the buckle Dr. Tornambe has worked on has a circumferential element and a radial element. It can be placed between or underneath the muscles, it can be fixed in place with just two sutures, and it is implanted using the same procedure as a conventional scleral buckle.
