Vision Blue dye can be used to stain the trabecular meshwork. The technique is identical to staining the anterior capsule in complex cataract surgery and is performed at the beginning of the cataract surgery—before viscoelastic has been put into the anterior chamber. The TM picks up the stain and helps the surgeon identify the meshwork to expedite implantation of the iStent. The staining is variable—both along the meshwork in one eye and from patient to patient. Sometimes the staining is only apparent when the iStent incision in the meshwork is seen in contrast to bright white posterior wall of Schlemm's canal. This allows the surgeon to identify the interior of the canal and ensure that the iStent has been placed at the proper depth—within the canal rather than too superficial and skimming along the meshwork.
