To inject silicone oil I use the 25G cannula.

Thanks. Do you use the same blue adapter to INJECT silicone oil? or you use the provided 25gauge cannula? Thanks again.

Everything comes in the pack. I use the blue adapter. Removing 1000 centistokes oil is much quicker, but the 5000 centistokes removal is also quick (about half an hour). We compared it to the time it takes us to remove oil with 20G vitrectomy, and found the 25G to be faster.

I just realized it is part of the blue adapter. I will try it soon. Thanks

Thanks for sharing. I have been also using the short 25g adapter included in the pak and it takes me about 30 minutes just for the silicone oil to be removed. Where do you get that "clear adapter" that links the syringe "blue adapter" and the 25g cannula? Thanks again.

Thank you for your response. This procedure takes in average 32 minutes from start to end (I reviewed all my cases to provide you with this information). You are right about the need to use a short, solid cannula. The series of air-fluid exchanges are for ensuring all silicone oil droplets are evacuated from the vitreous cavity. The same procedure can be done on phakic patients, although, most of the patients with long standing silicone oil are pseudophakic (I had only 3 patients that were phakic).

My experience with this system has been that it takes much longer (35 minutes just to get the 5000 cs oil out.) I have been using the short, solid 25g cannula included in the pack however, so likely the increased length caused the delay, based on Poiseuille's law and all.) What does 'a series of air fluid exchanges' mean, since you show just one in your video? Does that help get additional oil out? Any changes in a phakic patient?

You can obtain the cannula from Alcon. It comes with a pack that is called Viscous Fluid Control Pak. Ref#8065750957.

Nice technique, but it takes a certain time. What kind of cannulae do you use?

It really does not take very long, even though the oil is viscous. Surgery time from insertion of the cannula to removal of ports takes about 30 minutes including oil removal, and a series of air-fluid exchanges. I use 25G+ Alcon cannula, and Alcon's silicone oil removal syringe. Thank you for watching and thanks for your comment!
