Piggyback Implantation of Toric and Multifocal IOLs: Exploring Uncharted Territory

Show Description +

In this video, Dr. Suresh K. Pandey, and Dr. Vidushi Sharma, Eye Surgeons of SuVi Eye Institute and Research Center, Kota, Rajasthan, India, describe the piggyback implantation of multifocal and toric IOLs to correct high refractive error in cases of hyperopia with astigmatism. At present, neither AcrySof Toric or AcrySof ReSTOR Toric IOLs are available in power beyond 30 diopters. Refractive lens exchange and implantation of multifocal and toric IOLs in piggyback manner remains a valuable option to manage such cases.

In one of the case described in this video- we have implanted both the IOLs in the capsular bag (Not in the ciliary sulcus). Ant. CCC was enlarged with YAG Laser after 6 weeks time (cruciate relaxing incision) and this was done to prevent ILO. In another case, we have implanted hydrophilic Acrylic IOL in sulcus as haptics in this IOL design has very smooth ant. and post. surfaces of the hapticsand optics. After a follow up of more than one year there is no incidence of high IOP or UGH syndrome. Thanks, Dr Suresh K Pandey, Kota, India

umm did you just implant a one piece IOL with thick haptics into the sulcus? have fun managing the resulting UGH syndrome.
