I assisted Tatsuo Hirose, MD on about 50 of these cases from around the world during my fellowship. He would leave a hinge of the cornea intact. As long as the fibrous plaque was removed without creating a break the retina often attached with ambulatory vision. Viscoelastic was used to open to funnel slowly. No drainage was necessary. Very challenging dissection to say the least.
