Fine Needle Diathermy Occlusion of Corneal Vessels with Adjunct Anti-VEGF Injections

Show Description +

This patient had an old corneal alkali burn injury, with near total loss of corneal limbal stem cells. Corneal neovascularization occured, as expected.
A suture needle was passed under the corneal stroma at the level of the neovascularization. A cautery was then touched to the needle to cauterize the vessels. This was repeated at multiple sites of neovascularization.
Following cauterization, injections were completed in a peri-limbal fashion near the area of feeding blood vessels.
The main purpose of this procedure was to prepare the patient for a corneal transplant in the near future.
