On July 20, 2013, David Boyer, MD, of Retina-Vitreous Associates Medical Group, performs a navigated focal laser treatment with the Navilas system (OD-OS Inc.) on a patient with diabetic macular edema who is non-responsive to anti-VEGF therapy following numerous injections.
Dr. Boyer explains the importance of the navigated laser treatment to improve precision and accuracy for a more complete targeted treatment as well as the standardization of treatments, which is essential to achieving optimization in retinal disease management. Current studies in which Navilas laser treatment attempts to reduce the number of anti-VEGF injections required are underway, Dr. Boyer says. This approach may improve compliance among patients by providing a more comfortable laser treatment while reducing the frequency of injections required. Dr. Boyer concludes by introducing his ideas for expanded applications with the Navilas system, integration with a variety of retinal imaging devices, and and seamless and effective incorporation of the device into a multi-surgeon practice.
