Hello, I am Maria Berrocal and I'm going to be talking about my presentation at Subspecialty Day on treatment of traction retinal detachments.

So traction retinal detachments are one of the most common complications of diabetes that we treat surgically. And the pearls for doing this are to first try to apply laser preoperatively, to have a good view. I like using the smallest gauges possible. So in my case, I prefer 27-gauge. And I like it because it allows me to get into very tight tissue planes and do the entire dissection just with the vitrectomy probe. I like using a wide angle viewing systems and I like using 3D viewing because it allows me to manipulate the image and to have a really magnified view of the posterior pole at the same time that I see the periphery.

Ideally, the most important thing when you're treating traction retinal detachments is not to create any iatrogenic breaks because then you're committed to removing everything. But if you do not, just remove all of the traction, remove all of the adhesions of the vitreous to the fibrovascular tissue and to the retina. This is key to prevent proliferation later on and always apply really good PRP.

So in a nutshell, I think these tips will increase your success rate in these very challenging cases. Thank you.
