Professor Silva provides an overview of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and the associated underlying diseases, risk factors and other complications, such as macular edema. He discusses the reduction in patient quality of life, the economic burden of CRVO and the comparable costs in other diseases. As treatment outcomes are still not optimal for CRVO patients, current challenges in the management of CRVO include the need to optimise existing treatment protocols and the lack of evidence-based, international guidelines.
