The Artificial Cornea: Boston Keratoprosthesis

  Channels: Cornea | Posted 1/4/2012

In some clinical situation where corneal opacities or irregularities are responsible for significant visual loss and the prognosis of a standard corneal transplantation with or without limbal transplant is poor, the use of a keratoprosthesis should be considered. Jose L. Güell, MD, presents the use of a Boston Keratprosthesis in case with a history of three previous failed penetrating keratoplasties. The video illustrates how the PMMA optical central structure is included in the donor cornea before it is transplanted immediately on the recipient eye.
