Episode 30: Achieving Refractive Outcomes

  Channels: | Posted 10/30/2013

Jack T. Holladay, MD, of Holladay Consulting discusses with moderator, Erik Mertens, MD, his techniques in achieving the best refractive outcomes in cataract surgery. Dr. Holladay explains the importance of the back surface measurement for finding the corneal power. The measurement provides a more accurate value when calculating the IOL power. Dr. Holladay explains how there are still refinements to be made within cataract surgery, but doctors are working towards achieving one lens power, with an average prediction error of .18. Additionally, he discusses how toric IOL implantation procedures today have significantly improved outcomes, and manual incisions on the cornea will never entirely be able to compete with them.
