Claudio Iovino, MD:
Hi, I'm Claudio Iovino and I work as a retina specialist in Naples, south of Italy. I'm so glad to share this time with you. And we are here in Denver for the ARVO meeting. And I had the honor to present the results of our pilot study about the photobiomodulation in patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy. We all know that CSR is the fourth most common retinal disorder. And we know from the current literature that the PDT, the photodynamic therapy represents the standard of care in these patients. Nevertheless, it requires a dye injection, so a fluorescein angiography or a green angiography. And also it required injection of the verteporfin.
On the other hand, the photobiomodulation is a very easy to perform non-invasive treatment. And in our study we use the dedicated protocol with one treatment per week for four weeks and then another treatment for another two months. We had very good results and we presented the success rate of 70% of cases. So seven patients out of 10 showed a very good result with a complete reabsorption of the fluid. It usually occurs at about two, three months from the treatment. And now we have the 12 months results and the retina is still dry. So in other terms, we can say that the photobiomodulation can be considered a safe and efficacy therapy for patient with central serous chorioretinopathy, especially in those cases where we have not possibility to perform the photodynamic therapy or also for patient with bilateral retinal disorders. If you think about it with one treatment, you are treating both eyes.
