Scan Me, Scan Me Not: How Best to Use OCT for Glaucoma Screening or Establishing a Diagnosis?

Show Description +

Sanjay G. Asrani, MD, recaps his presentation from the American Glaucoma Society annual meeting about establishing a diagnosis using OCT. He explains that OCT helps to evaluate the progression of changes in the nuclear layer in patients’ eyes. He also stresses that diagnosis via artificial intelligence is limited because thinning layers in patients’ eyes could be due to coexisting pathologies rather than only glaucoma.

The term 'cupping' which was mistakenly introduced in the 1850s appears to be a significant barrier in the progress of glaucoma research. The original cups of various sizes from 0.00 to 0.9 are actually the central meniscus of Kuhnt which lie superficially on the nerve fiber layer of the disc; they have no relevance to glaucoma.
