Innovations in Glaucoma: The Corneal Safety of MIGS Implant Devices

Show Description +

Arsham Sheybani, MD, joins host I. Paul Singh, MD, to discuss a recent paper looking at endothelial cell loss in the pivotal trials of three MIGS devices: iStent inject (Glaukos), Hydrus (Alcon), and CyPass (Alcon), with the latter included to "provide readers a reference for when cell loss is truly clinically significant." As Dr. Sheybani explains in the episode, looking solely at absolute endothelial cell loss or endothelial cell density at any given time point may not be the best barometers of long-term corneal health, and it may be more important to look at rates of loss over time. Overall, he said, the study should reassure surgeons regarding the safety of the iStent inject and Hydrus devices for corneal health, as opposed to CyPass, which is documented to cause issues if not positioned properly.
