Capsule Opacity Prevention by Laser Cleaning System

Proliferation of lens epithelial cells is a major source of complications following cataract surgery. The authors present a new strategy to remove LECs to prevent a secondary cataract. With this technology, laser pulses hit the titanium target at the tip of the laser probe, generating shock waves to dislodge cells from the capsule which are then aspirated.

Laser capsule polishing represents a recent concept in PCO prevention. While it is demonstrable that in eyes treated PCO can occur at a lower rate, it has also to be mentioned that there have not been prospective RCTs to assess the effect against a "clean" Irrigation/Aspiration following phacoemulsification. The video clearly shows how the anterior capsule can be cleaned by the laser device, but it has also to be stated the same "cleanness" can be achieved by aspirating with the aspiraion probe positioned right against the inner side of the anterior capsule and sweeping then in a horizontal plane.
