The two physicians discuss the impetus for this shift in practice and outline the potential benefits and drawbacks of performing surgery in an office setting. Dr. Chu says that, although office-based surgery could improve convenience, the most important factor is patients’ safety. He notes that technological advances continue to increase the safety of cataract surgery, but ophthalmologists must understand the risks of performing the procedure in an office setting.
