Episode 7: Neuroprotection

James Tsai, MD, discusses neuroprotection as IOP-independent protection of the optic nerve. Differences in visual field preservation between brimonidine and timolol are described along with the use of memantine, a new class of Alzheimer’s disease medication. These treatments are directed at patients who continue to progress even with their pressure under control. The treatment of normal-pressure glaucoma is also covered, including the use of nutritional supplements and exercise.
