In this episode of CRST Journal Club, moderator Mark Kontos, MD, reviews cataract extraction using conventional technology versus laser cataract surgery with Karl Stonecipher, MD, director of TLC in Greensboro, North Carolina. Dr. Stonecipher explains that physicians need to have laser cataract surgery make sense from an economic standpoint, as it is a premium experience with a premium price.

In his study, Dr. Stonecipher found a 64% reduction in phaco time with the LenSx procedure, resulting in less time and energy in the eye. And data presented by Robert J. Cionni, MD, indicates laser cataract surgery results in more effective lens positioning. The combination of lower energy, less time in the eye, and better lens positioning results in lower amounts of retinal thickening and, therefore, statistically significant results.
