TearLab - Ask the Experts: Punctal Plugs Effect on Tear Osmolarity

By Derek Cunningham OD, William Townsend, OD

William Townsend, OD, explains to Derek Cunningham, OD, why tear osmolarity testing has changed his use of punctal occlusion for the treatment of dry eye disease. After seeing the results of a study he was involved in, Dr. Townsend noted that patients had an appreciable decline in tear osmolarity following insertion of a punctal plug, which paralleled a decline in reported symptoms. In addition to proving the efficacy of the treatment modality, the results of the study have also helped to define which patients will benefit from punctal occlusion, Dr. Townsend says.
