The Role of Oxygen

Sabine Kling, MD, reports on the role of oxygen in corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL). In animal models, Dr. Kling and her colleagues studied how varying the amount of oxygen available affected the efficacy of CXL. Their findings suggest that higher oxygen levels increase CXL’s biomechanical efficacy and that the procedure is much more effective in thin corneas, which could allow modifications to the standard treatment protocol.
